Japan Supports Health Care Services in Wakiso

Today, the Embassy of Japan is to hand over a project of 67,632 USD for development of arthroscopy unit at Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services in Uganda (CORSU Rehabilitation Hospital) in Wakiso district.

H.E. Kazuo Minagawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, will officiate the commissioning of the project.

CoRSU in Wakiso district is a local NGO, which was established in 2006 and is the only rehabilitation centre specializing in orthopedic operation as well as rehabilitation services. The services have been provided not only for the people within the country but also those from neighboring countries such as South Sudan, DRC and Tanzania, 80% of whom are physically handicapped children with walking difficulties. Through this project, a set of arthroscopy equipment has been provided and the quality of arthroscopy service improved, benefiting more than 4,000 disabled people. It will also develop the arthroscopy service in Uganda by enabling doctors to have quality training with the arthroscopic machine.

The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, a total of 166 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.

Japan is committed to promoting African development through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process with mutual ownership and partnership, working hand in hand for the peace and prosperity in Uganda and Africa. TICAD was launched in 1993 and has since been held every five years, and the TICAD V conference was held in June this year at Yokohama celebrating the 20th anniversary of the initiative.
